Veritas 6.5.2A AIX 5.3 ADIC Scalar 2000 8 LTO3 2 LTO4s. We back up about 50tb per week. We keep monthend, first Saturday/Sunday of month and other images permanent. Our catalog size is about 210GB. We have catalog compression set to 31 days and are going to change it to 14 days. If there any other way to reclaim space? We have attached to san so we can add space just seeing if the 210GB size sounds unreasonable or is this about the size of some other peoples out there? Thanks.

200GB sounds reasonable. If you have SAN then it is easy to add additional space if needed. I would not bother changing the compression to 14 days. 30 seems reasonable as most restores will come from the last full backup but once in awhile a restore from the monthly backupis needed.
I would be more concerned about establishing a mirror for quick offline backups of the catalog. I trust that more than the symantec provided online catalog backup.
But hey these are my preferences. Do what your management will allow you to do but stress the importance of ALL data that is considered important enough to backup to tape shoulld also have an important catalog protection system :)

We replicate all disks on the master backup server each morning but we might increase this to run every 4 hours. We also run the catalog backup but I agree with you plus our online catalog backup takes about 6 hours to run. Thanks again.
