trying to run full backup using veritas, it will progress half way through but then eject the tape stating that the media set already contains data. I amusing a hp surestore dat 24 tape drive, I have created a media set and label and moved it into scratch media, overwrite options are set. Any suggestions.

What size is the tape and how much data are you backing up?

-SQLBill

Tape Size is 24GB.

Data Dir is 16gb
Exhange Info Stores 6GB
Mailbox Stores 8gb

Will the tape drive compress to this level.

Do you have it set to do compression? And is it set to use hardware or software compression.

Lastly, which version of Backup Exec are you using?

-SQLBill

Version 8.6 of Backupexec.

And yes it is set to Hardware Compression if available.

What does your tape say compression size is?

24/?????

For example: My tapes are 100GB/200GB. That's uncompressed/compressed.

Check the manual/users guide for the tape drive to see if it does compression. If it doesn't then using hardware compression won't work.

IN BE8.6 there's three options for compression:
try setting it to Hardware Compression (if not available, use software)

I have run a long erase on the tape, I then set a backup running , it gets to 15gb and then ejects the tape when I log at the log it states this:-

OFO: Started for device: "D:"

Media Name: "Media created 25/09/2003 11:52:33 "
Backup of "D: data"
Backup set #3 on storage media #1
Backup set description: "Daily Backup"
Backup Type: FULL - Back Up Files - Reset Archive Bit
Backup started on 26/09/2003 at 01:16:57 .

Targeted Media Set Name: 1st Media
The media provided to continue the backup already contains data
from one or more sets created during this operation.
The operation can not be continued

The tape is a HP DDS 3 model number C5708A.

It states 24gb*, back in August we used exactly the same tape model and it worked a treat

The tape could have gone bad in some sectors.

It might be an issue with the header portion. Try "LABEL MEDIA" option. (Highlight the tape, right click on it and select Label Media).

The error you are getting means that it's looking for a second tape.

How much data is left to be backed up? Veritas could have figured that there's more than 9 GB to backup still and that the 15GB point was a good place to 'break' the job up. My understanding is that it will break a job up at a point where one file won't overlap to two tapes. It wants all of one file on one tape.

Isn't a tape listed as 24 actually 12 native, and 24 is if you can achieve 2:1 compression ratio? In my experience, including using something like Zip or Arc, text files will compress rather easily better than a 2:1 ratio, but if you have a lot of binary files (images, executables, etc.) you'll see compression more on the lines of 1.4:1 or less.

I am having the same problem. Veritas runs halfway and then states: The media provided to continue the backup already contains data from one or more sets created during this operation.

My drive does support compression and it is checked. Do I need to adjust the compression setting? Has any of the suggestions worked?
