A company I work for is currently working with Retrospect (the latest version) to backup all their intel servers. I'm more familiar with Veritas. If I were to convert to Veritas, I'd have to justify the expense. Does anyone know what features are better in either?

Thanks.

they both do the same job - they backup your data and then hopefully get it back if you need it.

I think you should go with what you are comfortable with.. though the only things that I can see which may be of interest to you are..

- Support - Veritas offer 24x7x365 support for Backup exec - restrospect(dantz) look like they only do support during business hours - ask yourself this - when are you most likely to need support from the company - that's if you ever need it.
- Don't quote me on this - but when I read last, Backup exec were in 60%+ Fortune 500 comapnies - this may mean nothing to you - but to me it is saying that 60%+ of companies out there use backup exec, then it must be a good product.

Though the bottom line is, you will need to work out what you are spending on retrospect at the moment - and compare that with a move to backup exec - accountants always like to see how much money you will save them.

I am currently using both since I had to put in USB-2 Seagate Travan Tape backups in some low end servers. I am using Backup Exec 9.0, however Veritas does not support USB-2 storage devices as of yet. Tech support said the update should be coming in the near future. I wound up with Retrospect 6.5 for single servers, for this reason only. The interface is not as well laid out. Email notifications leave much to be desired. Scheduled tasks are more of a pain. Its just not as good of a product over all in my opinion. Yes they both do the same job, but veritas gets you there better.

Thanks - I noticed in Veritas, the system state backup was obvious. I didn't see it in Retrospect.
