My media set has an 8 day overwrite protection and 10 hour append period. Overall overwrite protection is set to partial, and overwrite scratch media before recycle.

This started happening 3 weeks ago. I label every tape in there first, so now I have eight slots filled up with scratch media. I also tried moving them manually into the media set right after labeling the tapes. For some reason, the backups would choose slot 2 one day, slot 7 the next, slot 3, etc. The next time I insert new tapes, it would choose slot 4, slot 6, etc. It seems to be totally random. The drive is a Dell SDLT320 8 cartridge autoloader. If anyone has any ideas, I would appreciate it.

I had a similar problem with my LTo Autoloader and Backup exec. I created a different media set for each days backup job, and changed the default under to: Tools|Options “Overwrite recyclable media contained in the targeted media set before overwriting scratch media”
