Veritas 8.6 Windows 2000 and Power Vault going offline

I have a 2000 server running Veritas BE 8.6 with a PowerVault tape drive that keeps going offline when trying to label media. I was able to label half of the tapes but it always fails in the middle and take the loader offline. I've disabled Removable Storage services, restarted the tape drive but still have some issues. I read it may be best to lower the scsi transfer rate, where can i edit this and how low should I be going. Thanks for any help.
