Every time I tried to access the NIS logs or fire up an Office Ap while connected to the Internet I'd experience LONG delays while my computer contacted Verisign to check for the latest Certificate Revocation List (CRL). I surprisingly found out this is a result of Microsoft's "helpful" default IE setting for this behaviour which allows Verisign to "sniff" your computer each time you fire up an app with an associated certificate (like Word or NIS) - a problem aggrivated by my consistent clearing the IE's cache (and erasing cached CRL information).
YOU CAN PUT A STOP TO THIS VERY ANNOYING BEHAVIOUR (AND SPEED UP YOUR APPS AS WELL)!!!!!!! In Internet Explorer Tools, Options, Advanced, uncheck the CHECK FOR PUBLISHER'S CERTIFICATE REVOCATION and CHECK FOR SERVER CERTIFICATE REVOCATION. This will allow you to fire up your authorized apps (with valid certificates) without undue delays caused by Verisign sticking its nose in your system every time.
The default behaviour still stands my hair on end that such behaviour was permitted!!!!!!!
