I have a 3640 router w/ a Hssi interface. Up until now I have had a partial DS-3 from my ISP, but have ordered an increase to a full DS-3. I can't find anything in the router config. or in the config. on the external Adtran CSU that shows any current restriction. I have always assumed that my provider was restricting it on their end. I am beginning to think that they have already unrestricted their end and I am getting a full 45 Mbps. How can I verifiy this / my current bandwidth capacity?

There's a number of things you can potentially do:

1. Run a quick and dirty FTP test. May need one of those apps that open multiple download threads which will help take all the available bandwidth. Naturally make sure no other users are using the WAN at the time. I describe it as quick and dirty as the results you get back may be unrealiable and prone to numerous external influences that can cause your speed to drop (congested FTP server, packet loss, suboptimal TCP window settings on server/client)

2. Connect to one of the many Internet bandwidth testing sites (like and see what it reports. Again, this is about as reliable as the method above.

3. Get PC's end to end and run capacity tests between them using software like Qcheck ( This a little more reliable then the previous 2 tests but is still prone to TCP windowing issues and resends which may reflect as a lower bandwidth than you have.

4. Best method is to install 2 testers at each side of the link and have one of them flood the link. This method is very rleiable but these kind of testers are expensive and are specialist equipment. You could probably arrange a temporary hire of them though. At a place I worked at recently, we used the following testers from Sunrise Telecomm (
