We are switching over to EMV c/c terminals with a new provider. The new provider has linked us up with Verifone VX-520 terminals. The point of interest is that we have existing VX-520's already deployed with our current provider. The new provider claims they cannot reuse these (exactly same) terminals. Due to encryption keys being written down to the OS/firmware level. So these existing terminals cannot be reprogrammed over the wire through a download process.

Does this sound right? I've worked with c/c terminals and supported them since 2000 to one degree or another. And to be it sounds dubious at best.

Any informed opinions one way or the other?

I have heard about having to send in your card readers to be reprogrammed. I saw an ad that says Verifone VX520 can be reprogrammed but must be part # M252-653-A3-NAA.

Last I heard the Verifone was not certified to be able to apply a tip after the card was removed. I'd check on that first off. You don't want to have to ask guests for the tip amount before they give you the card. If it is not see if your card company can use the PAX S80. It is EMV certified and will allow for tips after the card is removed with at least some processors.
