Verification of rule change

While we edit rules via the GUI. (Checkpoint 4.0 on UNIX) we apply the rules by telnetting into the box and running a script.
what I would like to do is have a way of Checkpoint printing (via the console) a record of what changes are about to be made...before the rules are applied.
Is this possible ? Please let me know if so.
