I have a 300 GB traditional volume on my SAN that I intend to upgrade using VCU. Can anyone hazard a guess as to how long the process will require? We are talking about 280 GB or so uncompressed data.

sorry i have never used the vcu at all

only ever used clean nss or migarted etc

Do you have another 300 GB of free space? All VCU does is this:

1) Creates new NSS volume
2) Copies data
3) Removes old volume
4) renames new volume to old name.

The kicker is that it requires you have an equal amount of free unpartitioned space to utilize..

Knowing this, it would be easier for you to just create a new volume and migrate the data yourself. copy trustees.

The only real place I've found VCU to be useful is if I want to convert the SYS: volume.. but even then, most servers don't have any free space to do the conversion.

Yup, I have been prepping to upgrade it. Plenty of room. Is VCU less reliable or you just would rather not use an automated process?

I have not use VCU except in testing. The reason being is that usually when you go to a production environment there is no free space to use.

So what I'm saying is that I haven't used it enough to trust it, but I know if I manually do the migration that it's not an all-or-nothing shot. Plus if something fails doing it manually, I have a safety net.
