VB6 crashes on save or when trying to write an exe

I have an older XP sp3 machine I've been maintaining my VB6 sp6 apps on. I've had it off line for several month, but went online recently, downloaded MS updates, and installed them. Since I've updated, now VB crashes if I try to save anything. No warning - just a crash. Now you see it - now you don't. I tried doing a system restore but that had no effect.

I've tried transferring my files to another machine with VB6 (4 different machine) and they all do the same thing. My guess is that one of the common files or controls was changed and is causing this, but I don't have any idea where to start. I have a few 3rd party activex controls, so I hesitate to reinstall VB. Afraid I might loose them. In the end, I may be left with no choice, but does anyone here have a suggestions??

Thanks...

Can you open up a new blank project and just save it or does that cause a crash also?

Thanks for the reply. I can start a new project, save it, and create an exe. With the 'problem project', it has multiple forms with one as it's main form. It's the main one that's causing the crash. I don't have any idea of how to troubleshoot where the compile or save is dying. Recreating the form would likely take more than a month of work.

You may not have to. One possibility is that it is the project file that is broken rather than any of the constituent parts.

Create a new project, and then import (project/add file) all the components that make up the old project into it.

Sorry... I've been distracted here. I'm a one-man ship and trying to get things together for a major business/sales event. I'll travel from west coast to east coast and be away for 3 weeks. I've had to turn all my (miniscule) brain power on that task and had to put the problem with this particular program off until I return. I tried following your suggestion, but this is a program I've developed and maintained for more than 10 years. Along the way, it's gotten complexer and complexer. When I started rebuilding the project file, I ran into a lot of unanticipated obstacles (multiple versions of same or similar forms, 3rd party ocx controls, user controls, etc) that I'll need to work my way through. Thinking about it, I think you've given me the right answer - I'm just swamped right now. Thanks for your help. I'll keep you (and the list) posted on my progress. Thanks again... TedW
