VB6 and MS Acess 2000

I have crested a database and form in Access 2000 which works fine, i then wanted to make the same form in VB and have the final exe access the database,my query is that having loaded ms doa 3.6 component and made reference to it i still get the error " unrecognised format" when using the datamanager to load the database,so i converted the database to 97 format and all works ok BUT now when i load the database in access any changes i make i cant save, and i'm greedy and want to do both, wanting to reference it from my vb app but still open in access and update / modify etc, preferably i would prefer the database in 2000 format,any ideas as i'm sure i am loading and referencing the correct components in vb to allow me to use the access 2000 database
