I'm writing a program in VB5 to provide access control to multiple locations (about 20). Each location has to be controlled by the program to open a solenoid that controls the door, and each location has to be able to feed back to the program to indicate when the door is open and whether a switch is open/closed inside that door. Can anyone provide me with any sites/books/advice on how to tranmit basic on/off commands to 20 different locations from any kind of port on a standard computer (Serial,Parallel,USB,etc).

Thanks so much.

Welcome to TT Mshkor. To get the most from this site please read FAQ222-2244.

Now to somewhat answer your question. I was doing a search yesterday at yahoo for information on USB (search was USB). One of the responses was about programming devices through USB ports, so you may want to do a search for yourself and see if the site is worth anything to you. As for serial ports they have been discussed a couple of times and you may want to search this site and check out the faq section.

Good Luck and Good reading of FAQ222-2244

A quick google found this for hardware:
