I am cross posting this over in both the Backup and VB forums just in case. I have a situation where there are approximately 100 laptops/desktops. Previously, it was the responsibility of the users to backup their own data to the servers (which area all backed using Veritas)

However, that is too difficult for some people. They want to us to come up with .bat file that our users can click on that will back up all there docs to there User's Dir, which will then get captured in the nightly backups.

We have figured out the batch that will run this, selecting the the standard folders and such... but the big question is, how can we set the exclusion to skip .avi, .mp*, .ost and .pst files? Can't figure out how to make those options stick without having to touch everyone's PCs. Any ideas?

thanks, Ted

An intriguing dilemma! A thought is that within the batch file you use commands to turn all the archive attributes on, then turn the archive attributes off for the file types that you don't want to backup. You can then use XCOPY /A command to only copy any file with the archive attribute set.

The batch file should look something like this:

ATTRIB +A Folder\*.*
ATTRIB -A Folder\*.avi
ATTRIB -A Folder\*.mp* etc
XCOPY Folder\*.* Backup\*.* /A/S

It is a bit of a rigmarole but it should work.

Please let me know if it does!

Paul
