vb app turns on an electic external device

Hello all
I have code that runs 4 different power point show (pps file) every time a user pressKey (4 different keys), Now
I need to add another capability: if the user does not preesKey and the pps file ended, a light (a lamp)turns on.
What is the device/kind of communication I need? (beside the lamp), which control do I need for this task?
where can I get knowledgebase/ article on this subject?
any guidance will most appreciated

I dont know in particualr where you can get the hardware but you should probably look for a programmable switch with a serial port. I know they are avaialable as I have programmed apps interacted with many types of robotics and sensors through a serial interface.
