Hi,

INFO ***********
Win2K adv server - NBU4.5 DC FP6
PV136T
1 export slot and 3 tape drives
1 master - 4 media servers
****************
setup:
Daily 3 vaults (SAN servers, Mail server, Non San servers)
7AM-MAIL
9AM-NON SAN
11AM-SAN+Catalog

Issues:
1: catalog is written on seperate tape (If you know we have LTO2 it's a waste of tapes)

2: I would like the 3 vault jobs would write to the same tape as all would fit on 1 tape. Now i have 3+1 catalog tapes a day. Other ways to accomplish this?

3: if i would add the policies to 1 vault profile. The 136T would load the "reading" tapes (3 tape drives) and wouldn't have tape drives to load the off site tapes so NBu will hang.

Let me know if more info is needed. Appriciate any help as this is bothering me for a while.

Thanks,
Wim

The only way to Vault tapes onto the same tape is if they had the same retention periods and are vaulting from the same Volume Pool.

The catalog will always be on a tape by itself since it uses a different format than other backups.

Richard,
Whenever talking about NetBackup; Be careful with the statement, "The only way to...." ;-)

I do vault, onto a single tape, images with different retentions and different volume pools.
I have been doing this since NB 3.4 while using the dup_param files and I still do it with the vaulting GUI in NB4.5
With the following caveats. Do either
1) enable multiple retentions during vaulting period
2) set the duplicated vaulted retentions to the same level

This might not be an acceptable solution for your environment but it works for mine.
It might work for other people researching Tek-Tips.

But I will point out that putting differant retention periods on the same tape is not a recommeded option. This is because the tape will be unuseable until the last image on it has expired.

Good point. Remember to remove "enable multiple retentions" when the vault job has finished.
