We have a tape library, and if we need to swap out the tapes, we normally need to run the eject process and then wait for ages until each tape is ejected out.
Using this route, the tapes are recorded in the correct 'off site backup' group.

However if we just manually take them out, they are not moved to the group, is there any way to get round this?

By taking the tapes out manually you have managed to defeat the integrity of the media in the library (robotic inventory) and defeat the Netbackup auditing of the tapes. Do you reinventory the robot after manually removing the cartridges? If you do, then netbackup will at least know they no longer have robotic residence. Personally I would see why the eject process is so slow, you could have another issue. Surely reteaching/reinventory of the robot is not exactly a speedy process after each manual remove.

manually remove them, run an inventory, then use the Netbackup move media function to move them into the proper volume group.

Just because the VERITAS documentation states a certain thing does not make it a fact and that is truth.
