We sent information to some of our contracted auditors regarding historical backup information. They have asked us to produce proof the we duplicated certain backups using the Vault software whose retention period ended long ago. Have any of you ran into a similar situation. The only thing I could tell them was that we have a hard copy on file of what backups have been duplicated but that once the backup expires we are no longer able to extract duplication information from Vault. I am using Netbackup 4.5fp6 for
HP-UX 11.11 and also have Advanced Reporter. Also I have Advanced reporter and use it every day to produce reports of backups that have ran in the last 24 hours. This report does not reflect any Vault activity. Do future versions have this capability?

Hard copies should be perfectly fine and auditors should accept that.

Most auditors don't know how to audit backup enviroment's..anyhow

If your vault job is set to the correct retention and you sent the doop tape offsite, and now the vault is expired and you've since brought it back for use...then your vault is perfect..

When I first started here....I learned that they were sending tape offsite and never bringing them back...imagine the mess that created...

Hard copy on file? Is that still avail?

I keep a harcopy and softcopy avail. You should too if you send tapes offsite? You have the receipts from when the vendor picked up the tapes?

Here's the info I keep on the records for quick recovery from vault-

server name/backup name
tape #
vault data/backup date
return date

As SOP, we have our operations keep a binder of the Vault report for at leat 10 years... I know 7, in some industries is all you need, but you can never be too careful...

Thank you both for your responses! I haven't heard anything back from my management yet but we are basically going to tell them that we have hard copy receipts from the tape vendor and also our own home grown lists that are kept indefintely. I would think that this should satisfy their interest on this matter. Thanks again!
