We recently switched to SQL SERVER 2000, Standard edition, on a Windows 2003 platform. The memory is 4 g, set to 70% read and 20% write. 100 users. We are experiencing widly varing response times. Does SQL Server handle 1 request at a time? Do the number of reads shown in the profiler indicated the work, and therefore the potential for slowdown of the Server? What indicators can I look for to see what is causing problems?

SQL Server 2000 STD edition can only use 2gb of memory. So even though you have 4 gb it can't use it. SQL Server can handle thousands of requests at one time. How many is directly related to the configuration of your hardware. Are you experiencing varying response time for the same query?
Do you have your data and log files on the same array?

- Database performance looks fine, it must be the Network!
