Can a flash object send and recieve variable changes from a program running outside of its window?

I would like a series of buttons that light up or turn off based on the variables being used in a C++ program. Then I would like to change the variable by pressing the button in the flash window, making the change available for the program to use.

Javascript and Flash can communicate...

I suppose you could somehow hook it up to a C application! Regards,
