variable in xsl:when scope

Is there any way to declare a variable within the scope of an xsl:when element and access it from outside that element's scope?

Probably a better approach would be to describe the problem you are having at a higher level, so we can suggest an appropriate solution. My first opinion, upon reading your question, is that you are probably trying to solve your problem incorrectly. Show us (at least some of) your stylesheet and a description of the input and desired output.
