I've done a bunch of reading on this issue and I'm not understanding what the issue really is. I've got Apache set up and the root is /var/ When I ftp to the site I can't access those dir's. But then I tried to create some simple code and link to an images dir I created, /var/ and I couldn't view them from the web. So, I'm thinking this is a httpd.conf issue.

Is this a <Directory> issue or a user issue? Should I be "linking" the root to a user directory and then use something like that?

Any help would be great!

I'm using vsftpd everything is default other then the anonymous user and I changed the umask to 077 thinking it would give the user more access. I don't think it has much to do with anything cause I couldn't even http to the /images folder I had created. But what do I know...

This is also not related to Apache, but don' set vsftp to allow anonymous users to put files anywhere they want.

Many distros put the apache document root in the /var mount point by default, so that's not really uncommon. A /srv mount point would probably be better, though. jbrusie, you have two seperate issues - how (& where) apache serves files & how to get them there (by ftp). Based on the description in your first post, you should be able to access the files in /var/ by using the full filename as long as apache has read permissions for those files. What exactly happens when you try?

And those same distro's install most .RPM's in /usr rather than the correct place /usr/local.

Common doesn't mean correct.

Lets all get along...anyways, I changed some permissions and now things seem to work...I'm just learing and its only a test box so I'm not too worried at this point...so I'll keep on a playin!

Thanks
