What are the files in this directory for? I have one particular file that is over 100MB here and its called vmcore.0 is this just a core file or does it have some importance?

thanks

Files under /var/crash are kept for analysing the dump from a system crash.
This is usefull for finding the cause of system crashes.
If you are not having system crash problems or if the file dates back a long time then just delete it.
