Hi,

have you checked your /etc/syslog.conf file for the following entries:

*.err;kern.debug;daemon.notice;mail.crit /var/adm/messages
user.err /var/adm/messages

If you don't have these entries for some reason then add them to the config file and send the SIGHUP signal to the syslogd:

# ps -ef | grep syslogd
let's assume the pid of inetd is 184
# kill -HUP 184

And make sure that the permission of /var/adm/messages is writable for root.

Thanks , that helped.
Can you please tell me what I can do to make sure that it creates /var/adm/messages.0 , .1 and creates a new /var/adm/messages everyday
thanks

Have you had a chance to look at the /usr/lib/newsyslog? It swaps out the older log with a new one. You might want to add it to your crontab.
