Hello, I requested a vanity line 4357(HELP) from our local carrier and was told that number was not available.

Really? So there are limits to the exchanges that are available?

Could someone explain and/or point me to some literature on this topic?

Thank you!

I don't understand your question. 4357 is not an exchange.

214 would be an area code
856 could be the exchange/office code
xxxx is the subscriber

Thanks KC, yes that wasn't worded correctly...

I understand that a particular exchange may not be available to use with the 4357, but can't they just pick an available exchange/office code out of the hundreds of possible combinations?

Maybe I'm simplifying it too much.....I have extension 4357 available in PBX, so they just need to give me an exchange, no?

Unfortunately no, they just cant pick an exchange. Those exchanges are applied for an I believe assigned by the FCC. The routing all has to be set up to get that NXX to that carrier.

If you really want that XXXX you can look into buying a block of DID numbers for your companies own use.

John, I dont' see the difference....sorry for my ignorance, but if they can't create/provide an exchange for the xxxx(4357), then how is buying a block of DIDs going to make a difference? They can provide an exchange for a block of DIDs but not a single subscriber?

Thank you!

Trust me, they aren't going to buy or apply for an exchange just so you can have 4357. Maybe look into buying a toll free # but everyone wants 4357, HELP.

Thanks again KC, I didn't understand the limitations.

You cam always find the owner of the number you want 4357 and ask if they would like to sell it, that's your only option other than buying a 800
