validation rules

is it possible to build complex rules based on other values entered in the table (same record)? like if column 1 has an 'a' then column 2 can only have a 'c' or 'd', but if column 1 has a 'b', then column 2 can have 'c','d', or 'e'?
i know it is possible to build this into the front end, but for the project i am working on now, it would sure be handy.
also, if it is possible, if anyone could recommend a good site that deals with access 2003 validation rules, because i have not had much luck with my searches.
