Valid CSS syntax

I have a php script that dynamically creates a table. I would like the table rows to have alternate background-colors. I have this working with two styles called style1 and style-1 and was wondering if style-1 was a valid class name or if it worked by accident!

Valid code matters for forward compatibility. I think the syntax is valid, but you can validate it through the W3C:
