Valid characters in Message content

I'm having problems in sending a newline character within the message using the test programs amqsputc and amqsgetc that come with MQClient on NT.
Is this just a limitation of the test programs, or is it true for generally sending messages using MQSeries API?

I haven't been able to find the relevant section in the documentation , so any clues as to where to go would be v. much appreciated
