vaio laptop can't boot via cdrom, i installed linux on it using networking boot, I'm looking to recover the XP . is there any method to boot over network and reach some share to boot the recovery CDs?
thanks in advance .

Another tack would be to get one of the three Microsoft-approved external USB floppy drives:

USB\VID_03EE&PID_6901 Mitsumi
USB\VID_057B&PID_0000 Y-E Data; Sony part number 09K9835
USB\VID_0644&PID_0000 TEAC; IBM option part number 27L4226, FRU 05K9283

I am going to get one, as it's the only way short of slipstreaming to get SATA drivers installed on today's laptops when swapping Vista for XP. Seems the only one readily available is the Teac, but a call to Directron will tell me if this baby will work:

I know this is not what you asked about, sorry I can't be of more help in answering your original question.

Oooo...right question, wrong answer, sorry. You should be able to enable sharing on a network CD drive and select that drive in BIOS as the boot drive. If sharing is enabled on the network drive it should appear in the BIOS, you might need to enable "boot from network share" but other than that it should be relatively easy. Who makes the BIOS? Again my apologies for answering someone else's question here.
