Is it necessary for an inline Power supply (RJ45) for these handsets. Or if not then what circumstances would they be used. Thankyou

All IP phones require a power supply - either a separate power brick for each or POE from a midspan unit that supports several phones.

As the for Avaya 46XX so for the 56XX phones.
