I have a remote server that will not allow you to rlogin, rsh or telnet into it. The rlogin and rsh just hang while the telnet session stops right after the Unixware 7.1.1 (server name) (port) section. I can ftp into the server though.

It would seem that the [uw]tmp and [uw]tmpx fils in /var/adm are out of sync. I got the osmlog and the osmlog.old, but I did not find any mention of "syncutmp" in either file.

Also, you cannot login to the server via the console.

My question is, can I force a sync of these files at startup via a S##xxxx script since I can ftp into, I could write this and put on the server. Then have the admin reboot after to see what happens. And if I can do this, what commands would force this to occur.

Thanks in advance.

One simple solution, which of course loses your login history, is just to "flatten" the files using:

[tt]cd /var/adm
> wtmp > wtmpx > utmp > utmpx[/tt] Annihilannic.

Thanks Annihilannic. Server is backup and running now.
