USR 56k win int - suddenly stopped working

A friend of mine has recently bought a new pc.

The he was online last night with no problems, this morning he switched on his pc and went to connect to the internet, DUN returned this message

error 666 modem is not plugged in or out of service

clicking more info in the modem diagonostics results in an error

open com - couldn't open port

any help would be greatly appreciated Aaron Concannon
