I'm not sure about XP, but I know that the Linux drivers for many of the modems that I have had do not support voice, even though my Windows driver did. It is possible that the XP driver for this modem was not built to support voice. Of course this only seems to happen with WinModems. The externals never have these issues.

I have to believe that the driver on a WinModem is actually interpreting the commands that I send and converting them to a format that the modem understands.

you really hsould have to "switch" it.

like pansophic said, the XP drivers may not support it. you may want to download the latest from thier site and/or search it for a known resolution. i'd look into to it further but i don't know the model you have.
