how can i use the windows backup utility to do the following:

1. Schedule daily normal backup at 11:00PM
2. Maintain different cartridges for daily backup
3. Every day during working hours, i will take out the cartridge that has been backup up previous night, insert another one and the night backup will overwrite the existing files and do a fresh backup

are you serious? are any backups being done?

For the tape

Open Computer Manager compmgmt.msc Removable Storage this is where you'll find your free media to allocate it give it a name etc.

For the Backup
Start Run ntbackup.exe or Start Run All programs bla bla bla
Select Backup Tab all drives and folders etc you want to backup, Select you backup destination. Select your tape click start backup then schedule it Full or Differential.

thanks..will try

actually we are currently using Arc Serve 9 happily and our company wants us to switch to the stupid windows backup

Your tapes will give you some problems as I done this before moving from ArcServe9 to ntbackup. The tapes get a special label from ArcServe, it was a bit of a battle can't remember the steps but it is possible.

plz gimmie whatever tips you have :)

i am confused about the media pool, can the nt backup be automated, meaning i set the schedule and what to backup and on a daily basis will have to just change the cartridges

The media may come up unrecognized. Then mount the media. I think it then goes to the Free pool, then allocate it, I really cant remember it was about 2yrs ago when I moved away from ArcServe.

Yes,

Remember all open files will not get backed up, and if your running exchange you can no longer perform brick level backups. Why not buy the upgrade pack?

When I get my new SQL server end of Feb I'm buying Symantec Backup Exec moving away from ntbackup.

we dont have exchange rather lotus domino which does not have such issues.

please mention how can i use 5 cartridges in such a way that i use 1 each day for the schedule backup and after the 5th one is used, i will use the first one again

Those making the decisions in your company seem to be off-kilter to me. Why would anyone bother moving from Brightstor or any other backup solution to use Windows Backup instead, especially in an enterprise environment?

Good luck with that.

OK here we go
Open ntbackup [dont use that stupid wizard]
Select the drives folders you want to backup.
Backup Destination = Select your Tape Drive e.g.LTO
Backup Media Or FileName in your case = New
Click Start Backup, give it a backup discription and select replace media [well I do anyway else the tape will be full after one backup]
Click Advanced Select if you want Full backup or differential etc
Then Click wait for it schedule, and save your current selections e.g as 2007 whatever
Give it a Name e.g. Monday
Click Properties
Schedule Task = Weekly
Select your start time
and Check Monday
I always select wake up computer to run task
Now do that for each tape Monday to Friday and label the Tapes
What I do is have 2 sets of Monday to Friday = 2 weeks backup.
Monday to Thursday differential backup and Friday set 1 week to run full on Satrurday and one on Sunday.
Hope this helps
