I used a machine for a file server test and now I need to reload Windows 98. The only copy of Win98 I can find is an upgrade CD. It gets to the point where it is checking for compliance and then can't find anything (since I re-formatted the drive, duh!)

Does anyone know what file it's looking for or how I can get around this? I don't really want to load 95 then really upgrade.

Thanks!

It's only looking for the Win95 CD.
When prompted, put it in, wait a few seconds, and the setup will prompt for the 98 upgrade CD again, and then continue.

Cheers,
Jim

Just to add to ComTech's answer, when you use the Win95 cd to verify the ability to upgrade, you will need to enter the Win95 product Code so make sure you have it as well..

I have had to every time I did it.. I can't see why any others would be different but one never knows with Microsoft..

Wolluf:

Just to clarify.. If Win95 is already installed, then using an upgrade Win98 will work.. However, all they have is the upgrade cd and NO Win95 installed. Therefore, entering the Product Code for Win95 will be required to fulfill the requirements of using the upgrade cd.

Murray - I was thinking of upgrading to ME - it requires 95 or 98 disk, but doesn't require previous key (I've not upgraded to 98 for many years, and have only done it starting in win95 - sorry for the question!)

Wolluf:

No problem.. But, if you are doing a clean install of a newly formatted hard-drive with a WinME upgrade only cd, you will need the Product of both the WinME and Win98 or 98SE CD to verify the authenticity of the upgrade..
