Hi all,
Would Virtual Basic 5 or 6 remain a viable alternative to Visual Studio 2005 in order to avoid large run-time downloads by users?
I created a small app the new using VS 2005 but apparently C# always is dependent on the .NET run-time environment(dotnetfx). With its nearly 25 MB, that's a large file for download/distribution but users. (Note: that developing in Java is even worse requiring the user install Java VM which is over 100 MB.) Are there recommendations to continue using older VB to avoiding the large downloads required by .NET or Java?
Can the built EXE contain only the required class libraries?
Which version of Virtual Basic would you recommend to allow system IO calls, VBA, etc. and are still supported? Otherwise, I might need to develop version in pre-compiled (e.g. C++) or interpreted language (e.g. VB) until .NET or Java becomes more prevalent on user PCs.
Any thought or suggestions regarding using VB and specific version such as 5 vs. 6.
Thanks.
Rob
