Hi

My client has Oracle 8i on Unix platform. Using Crystal Enterprise also on Unix platform.

I was uploading reports to Enterprise, and I encounter 'can't open SQL Server' on Server used: reportserver.

What is the problem? Why should I get a SQL Server error on a Unix box?

I don't think that is a very good answer, because every company will use different platform that will best suit them as what will be most reliable for them.

But, I believe I have figured out what is the problem. The Crystal Enterprise Administrator did not configured the ODBC source on the server. Since, I believe he didn't add the Oracle database for the sources that I am using I was not able to run the reports.

Thanks for your help anyway,

LinPro - 'can't open SQL Server' is a generic message meaning that there is no database connectivity. It does not specifically relate to MS SQL Server. A number of Crystal Reports and Crystal Enterprise Documents refer to SQL-based servers.

You did one of the troubleshooting steps I would have recommended, which is to ensure that your datasource is properly configured.

Thanks Kurt

I will find out by monday whether my suspicion is correct.

I hadn't even considered that it was something so basic, if you follow the link I provided, it was specific to connectivity problems in CE, not the fact that you would expect it to be able to use a database without connectivity.

A few contracts ago a large company was going to implement on UNIX and I suggested that they contact Crystal and ask whether they'd implement on UNIX given a choice.

They hired me a month later to reinstall on NT.

You don't think that it's a good answer, but the honest folk at Crystal do, as would 99% of the people who have implemented in both worlds.

Having come from an HP/IBM big iron background I think that UNIX kicks butt, but I wouldn't select it in this instance.

Good luck.

I would have to say based on my experiences Crystal 8.5 on Unix is not a good idea. Support was basically thrown into that release as it was necessary, not because it was ready. The upcoming 10.0 release is supposed to have fairly good Unix support. I spoke with someone I know that is Beta testing and it does seem to run well on Unix even in beta.

While "don't use Unix" sounds like a bad answer, sometimes it is the truthful one.
