I am in the process of creating a macro that will import an Excel spreadsheet on a weekly basis into my Access97 database. The file will have a different name every week such as GEMS20020520.xls or GEMS20050527.xls. How can I make Access prompt me to select a file name? Or is there a way to write code for the prompt?

liltechy

Try this:
Dim strTblName As String
Dim strInput As String
strInput = "What would you like to call the table?"
strTblName = InputBox(Prompt:=strInput, Title:="Provide Info")

DoCmd.TransferSpreadsheet acImport, acSpreadsheetTypeExcel97, strTblName, "c:\yourexcelfile.xls", True, ""

That's assuming you have the path for your excel file hardcoated (and of course you'd substitute that path for the c:\yourexcelfile.xls". . That part could also be coded - having the user pick the file using a windows file open dialog box, but I'm guessing from your message you don't need that.

The file won't have a standard name, it will change every week. I need the file open dialog box to open so the user can select the file to import. How can this be done?

I do not know about what you are trying to do BUT if you always have the file in the same location you may be able to use the filesearch function to list all of the files in the directory and then you pick the one you want and do your processing on that file.

There may be an easier way to fetch a filename, as this code has been around for awhile. It works fine though.
This will bring up an "Open File" dialog box. You can set the default drive and path it will open up to, the extensions to view, and return the drive, path and filename.

**********Sample Calling routine Begin***************
Sub FindOpenFileName()
Dim pth as string 'This is the default drive and path you want a as default display.
'Within the routine you can set the extenstions you want to appear as well.
'The Variable "varFileName"=drive, path and filename selected

GetOpenFile pth, "Export file Folder Location:"
End Sub
**********Sample Calling routine End***************

Does anyone know the significance of the "&" suffix in the following statement: If IsMissing(Flags) Then Flags = 0&.

I know that an "H" prefix in a declaration or assignment statement is hexadecimal notation, and an "O" prefix, is Octal notation. I've seen the & suffix notation before, but I can't remember what it signifies.

Thanks,
tedlan
