Hello,
I am getting the following error message when trying to restore a database:

The file 'R:\MSSQL7\DATA\DBNAME_DATA.MDF' cannot be used by RESTORE. Consider using the WITH MOVE option to identify a valid location for the file.

Does anyone know what this means?

That error comes from SQL Server itself. You may not have an R: on the restore machine or there isn't enough space on that partition. Check the SQL ERRORLOG and VDI.LOG files to see if the cause of the error is listed.

ACiDelic- Thanks for the response!

There is plenty of room to do the restore, and we had mapped a R: drive, which had worked for us in the past. This time it is just giving us problems.

This is what I see in the SQL error log:
2003-04-14 11:11:38.58 kernel BackupFileDesc::VerifyCreatability: Operating system error 5(Access is denied.) during the creation/opening of physical device R:\MSSQL7\DATA\DBNAME_DATA.MDF.

We have double checked the security and all looks good. I couldn't find the vdi.log file. Where would this typically be located?

The vdi.log file resides in the sql error log directory, but that doesn't matter. I think you have found the error in the error log.

I suspect that since you are using a mapped drive that the SQL Server service does not have enough security rights to access that share. For example, I don't think LocalSystem has enough rights to access files on another machine.

If you are in a domain try running SQL Server as a domain account that has full access to the share. Make sure that you map the share using the same account. If you have other shares mapped to that machine use the same account, they may be confusing Windows.
