Using the MDX Layer with Pivot Tables

I am using the MDX OWCMDX layer to populate a pivot table object in a VB application. When it works it works excellently. However, it seems to work intermittently. Very simple MDX statements work, but for more complex ones, I just get 'query failed' in the Pivot table. These same MDX queries work if I use ADO MD or the MDX Sample application.

There doesn't seem to be any documentation anywhere for OWCMDX and non-Excel documentation/examples for the Pivot Table control are pretty sparse. Can anyone point me to samples or more information?
