Using switch with Road Runner

I am trying to connect 2 Windows XP PC's to the internet with a netgear switch. (Unfortunately I cannot afford a router which would be ideal).

The XP Home PC's connects without ANY problems, but my XP Pro PC refuses to renew it's IP.

I have tried eveything: installing latest drivers, downloading updates and service packs, reformatting HD(including mbr), flashing the BIOS, and buying a new NIC.

After buying the new NIC I tried everything again with no luck.

I am out of ideas, please help.

I am assuming that you have a DNS modem/router from Roadrunner that is handing out the DHCP addresses. Is this so?

If so, does your contract with Roadrunner allow for more than one DHCP lease to be obtained from the DSL modem/router?

This would cause the exact issue in your description.
Most ISPs will only give you one DHCP IP address lease at a time. (unless you pay more)

With road runner you have to call them to provision a second card and yes, they do charge you for it. The way I got around this was with a linksys router, it gives you the ability to advertise a vitrual mac address so your router gets the ip address from Road Runner. Then you have your pc's connect to the router they will get an ip address from DHCP on your router. Then you will be connected to the internet with one provisioned card. It is around 5 bucks a card last time that I checked so the router pays for itself pretty fast.
