Might be a silly question, but just asked of me. And while I don't think its possible, thought I would check out here.

Can you configure a TNSnames file to use another type db, like a SQL Server DB?

I have someone trying to use SQL Navigator to hit a Sql Server 2000 db. I don't believe this can be done, but not certain.

Any help or reply is appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi,
Go to

They have a product for SqlServer ( and for DB2 ) and, based on info on their site, it seems they have a way to use multiple databases with one tool ( not SqlNavigator )..

Hi,
Because using such a link would mean you would be using code developed for Oracle with SqlServer - a certain way to fail..[sad]

SqlNavigator uses database-specific code to perform its functions and they are not transportable.

Hi, That's not exactly the issue..
The language used by SqlServer for queries ( and certainly for DDL)is different from that used in Oracle ( both are 'flavors' of ANSI Sql ) so the queries would need changing depending on the database.
Besides, there are limitations when using hetergeneous db links thru ODBC that further restrict their usefulness in this situation.
