using spot color settings

I am making a card for our school building. The printers tell me I need to remake the card in Illustrator using spot color. The spot color our school district uses is 199. I opened the old file and selected spot color form the dialog box and typed in 199 for R. The G was 2 and the B was 2. I changed them to zero. The color now looks too dark.

Shall I trust the printer?

...spot colors are pantone colors found in the pantone library of illustrator (swatches flyout menu > open swatch library > color books > pantone)...

...spot colors are pre-mixed inks using one plate/separation for each color...

...you need to ensure your artwork is only using as many separations as is required...

...as long as your art is spot color plates, the onscreen appearance is irrelevant, for spot colors you have to look at a printed pantone swatch, not the screen appearance...

...to add to my above post, pantone spot colors have nothing to do with RGB color spaces or inputting 199 in the "R" channel...

...199 is the pantone reference number found in the pantone swatch book, in your case a shade of red...
