I'm not too clear why I would want to use ServerName or what it does?

What happens if I use 127.0.0.1 as a server name in a production environment?

e.g. From httpd.conf
#
# If you use Apache strictly for
# local testing and development,
# you may use 127.0.0.1 as # the server name.
#
ServerName 127.0.0.1

Thanks!

The ServerName is the domain name on a webserver but in your case it would be the machine name. It could be 172.0.0.1 or localhost but then you could only access the server from the local machine. If you use the machine name, it can be accessed from anywhere on your local network.
