using samba as domain server for windows

I have herd that there are ways to use Samba on a linux server to act as a primary domain controller for a windows network. The school I work with hosts about 20 computers and would like to avoid buying CALs for all of them, as well as the server price tag on windows server installations.

There are tutorials around on the web for how to do this, but I haven't been able to find anyone to actually tell me how it works for them. Has anyone been able to set up samba as a domain controller?

If you're not using windows servers at all, then the concept of a "domain controller" doesn't continue.

You build the samba services for file, print, device sharing, and users a configured to access it.

If you are, indeed, participating in a domain, then I recommend you read the archives in this related forum

I've successfully installed samba as a PDC role. We do not have a Windows server in our two satellite offices at this point, and samba manages the logins and file sharing.

I recommend getting a couple of workstations and a server for testing so you can work around the bumps. It took a while to get just right.
