Hello,

I am trying to configure a PC so that it can logon to a VPN and download the server copy of a roaming profile.

Currently, I recieve a message that says something like "Windows was unable to use your roaming profile and is using your local profile instead"
I have looked in to checking the "Dial a connection first" box but my VPN connection is not a dial up connection and therefore it does not appear in the list when I type my username and password in.

Is there anyway to connect to a VPN first then log on?

Thanks

No---connecting to the VPN IS entering a username and password---this IS how you connect to a VPN...

The only way that comes close to what you are thinking is a site-to-site, but usually the tunnel is up at all times, providing site-to-site connectivity all the time (like a T1, frame-relay, etc).

Thanks for your reply.

What type of things does the roaming profile store that is specific to the user?
The roaming profile is being set up on a laptop so I presume I will need to log in when connected to the actual network so I can periodically update my roaming profile on my laptop?

Thanks

Not too sure about roaming profiles, but I do know that you cannot connect to a remote-access VPN without entering a username and password.

you can setup a VPN connections in windows xp and have it connect when you click that dialup connection. I deployed that feature on all our laptops that go out with our supervisors so they can access the network here at corporate.

It works just like a dialup connection. When they enter their login info and click on the dialup option it uses the broadband connection to establish a VPN tunnel before it logs the user on to the computer. Because it downloads the info from the servers here for the user including roaming profiles, network shares, etc...
