Using Raid 0 on Seagate 500gb 7200.9 and 7200.10?

I have 1 Seagate (ST3500641AS) 500 gb, 7200.9 model hard drive and 1 Seagate (ST3500630AS) 500 gb, 7200.10 model hard drive. I was thinking about using them in a Raid 0 setup. They about the same specs for most things, 16 cache, 4.16 msec latency, etc. However, I think the 7200.10 model is probably a bit better than 7200.9 model, since it uses new technology like perpendicular recording. Would there me an possible performance problem if I use these 2 different Seagate models together in Raid 0?

You shouldnt have any problems although nothing is 100% I've got two hard drives of different brands and both are 400 gig drives, but one is slightly larger than the other as far as bytes go but I have them as a raid with no problems. You can always try it, as always keep back ups current just in case, and you should be ok.

This is a touchy topic, but I profess that RAID drives should be identical in capacity, make, and model. I believe the 7200.10 has more features than perpendicular recording, like the 16MB cache, that means you will be taking a performance hit. It's an excellent drive and should be paired with another exactly like it. You can then buy an external case and use the 7200.9 for backup!

But, to answer your question, you can probably RAID them without difficulty. Your performance will be limited by the 7200.9.

Well that 7200.9 also has 16 mb cache. However, from what I read in other forum it seems like raiding them may or may improve performance. Someone in another forum suggest that 7200.10 alone might be faster than 7200.9 and 7200.10 Raid 0. I might try get another 7200.10 drive, if I can actually find it cheap (I got mine 7200.10 for $159 after rebate) and raid them together.

Hi I am an intermediate/ advanced user I am reinstalling windows (needs a fresh start) but I can't remember exactly how I set up my raid and now people are telling me it's not worth it!!! I run windows xp pro, Amd athlon, Gigabyte Motherboard, 2x 40GB Western Dig ATA100/7200 8MB and a 160gb archive drive(if I missed something important please ask). Previously I used the two identical drives as a striped array partitioned at 40gb, C: for windows and D: for current documents, I was going to do the same again I do some graphics and video work and this set up seems good to me would you recommend I do the same again or is there no real gain? If you recommend I do the same again where do I get the raid controller can I create one before I format it all or can I download a new one? I did it with a friend before a couple of years ago and don't recall but I think it was a floppy disk before. Hope someone can advise me will be much appreciated.

Perserverance saved the day I have solved my issues except the question of wether a striped array is worth the performance over the stability but seen as I'm using it only for my os and no documents I think it is!!! Please do offer your opinions I would love to hear them but before someone says it when I update my hard drive I will probably operate a Raid 5 setup I understand this is a popular current setup giving the best of both. Look forward to hearing from you all.
