i have a standard out-of-the-box sendmail setup on a redhat 7.3 box. I would like to let each user filter their own mail with procmail. now i know procmail comes with 7.3 but i don't know whether sendmail uses it already or do I have to enable it somewhere.

i have run some tests and it doesn't seem to work like:

:0
* [fF]rom:.*matthewh.genestate.i989.net
/dev/null

this should bin all mail from my backup address but it still lands in my mailbox. someone told me to put this into my .forward file but that has no effect either:

"|IFS=' '&&exec /usr/bin/procmail -f-||exit 75 #matthewh"

thanks

I'm not a Sendmail or Procmail expert, but I think system wide filters go in the /etc/procmailrc file, and individual user filters go in the ~/.procmailrc file. If your using a Red Hat RPM package of Sendmail, most likely procmail is already set to work.

Like I said earlier, I'm not a Sendmail expert, but I think to use procmail, your sendmail.mc file must contain this line before you create your sendmail.cf file...

FEATURE(local_procmail,`',`procmail -t -Y -a $h -d $u')dnl
MAILER(procmail)dnl

...and also this...

define(`PROCMAIL_MAILER_PATH',`/usr/bin/procmail')dnl ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
