Using polygonal lasso tool

We use a desktop pc running Windows XP with SP1, loaded with Photoshop 7 (updated to 7.1 via web). Using the polygonal lasso tool causes the image to vanish at first click (to white background) and it won't reappear till I have scrolled the mouse across the pad like crazy. The problem makes use of the tool impractical for most selection purposes, as every click loses the image.

Has anybody handled the problem before?

Sounds strongly like a video card problem. Try updating your video card drivers.

To test it, turn your hardware acceleration down and see if the problem still occurs.
