Should this be avoided - I seem to get weird things happening when I try to print to my Postscript printer (after exporting a PDF from InDesign).

Things like graphics disappearing, separation not printing etc. and sometimes, files not printing at all.

Any experiences with these sort of issue with placed bitmaps and transparency?

There is little information here to answer.

Be sure to read all of the transparency documentation in the InDesign manual and the adobe.com site. There are a few rules to follow when working with transparency effects.

It is possible to use transparency on bitmap images.

Ok, I'll rephrase my question:

How come my PDF looks fine onscreen, but the areas of my document which contain overlaid transparent bitmaps are partially not printing???

When you create your PDF file, are you exporting in PDF/X-1a format? This flattens your transparency effects and should be suitable for even the most ancient of RIPs.
